Submission Guidelines ~
Use
of this web site constitutes acceptance of the HorrorMasters
User Agreement
|

|
 |
General
 |
Please
note: All of these policies are being revised as of January 1,
2008. You may still register and submit stories, but we are
currently re-tooling our approach. |
 |
We
ask that each author submit five horror stories. |
 |
We
allow submissions of previously published stories. It
is your responsibility to ensure that all submissions can be legally
published by HorrorMasters. |
 |
Email all submissions as Rich Text
Format (.rtf) attachments to Subs@HorrorMasters.com.
Only
email submissions will be considered.
See the example "Email Cover Letter on this page. |
 |
One
of your five stories will be a free
sample. This is to allow the typical internet user a chance to see
whether you're good enough to pay for. BTW, you'll be paid
for revenues generated from banner ads based on the number of
downloads for your free sample. We will begin selling
banner ads as soon as this website is sufficiently busy.
It is determined by a formula based on
the monthly number of downloads for your sample(s). |
 |
Payment
-- You
will receive 80% of the revenue generated by your stories.
We recommend that you review the details
of this process and please contact us if you have any questions
(Questions@HorrorMasters.com).
 |
We charge
our readers:
$.10 for short-shorts
(less than 1000 words)
$.25 for short stories (1000 - 7,499 words)
$.40 for novelettes (7,500 - 17,499 words)
$.50 for novellas (17,500 - 39,999 words)
$1.00 for novels (word counts of 40,000 or more). |
 |
This
works out to $.03/word for a 2500-word short story if it attracts 375
paying readers. |
 |
Checks will go out monthly to authors who have accrued at least
$10. We'll clear our books and send a check by
mid-January of each year. |

It's up to you
to define which sub-genre you associate with your stories.
We think we have most covered, but feel free to suggest
more. Most stories seem to be covered by the
following
sub-genres: Dark Fiction (Dark Poetry and Special Themes),
Ghost Stories (Ghosts, Haunted Houses), Gothic, Monsters (Animals,
Mummies, Other Creatures, Scientific Horrors Vampires, Zombies),
Occult (Satanic, Séances,
Witchcraft) , Psychological Horror
(Killers, Mental Powers, Psychological Problems), X-treme (Early
Decadence, Goth, Splatterpunk). You probably already
have a good idea of what these
categories mean, but if you're looking for some
guidance, here are a few suggestions.
There may be instances where you
want to throw in a plot twist and the sub-genre would give it away.
For example, it may be important for the reader not to know that your
main character is a vampire, but if the story is listed as a vampire story,
there isn't going to be much of a surprise.
For cases such as this, we suggest that you use the category "General
Horror".
